A Tip of the Recap March 15th

The Cubs have gone streaking and have now won 4 in a row to bring their record to 5-8 on the spring.

The Good

Travis Wood may have just grabbed the 5th starter spot after his outstanding performance in today’s game. He spun 5 shutout innings, giving up 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4.

Brian Schlitter and Corey Black were both due for a good outing and today they did just that. Schlitter pitched 2 scoreless innings and Corey Black was perfect in his inning of work, striking out 1.

Chris Denorfia provided all the offense the Cubs would need today by hitting a 2-run HR after Dexter Fowler coaxed a two-out walk in the 3rd inning.

The Bad

Zac Rosscup had been chugging along pretty well all spring and he did hold on to get the save today after giving up 1 run on 3 hits. He was bailed out big time by Rubi Silva who threw the tying run out at home. Rosscup did have a wild pitch but at least he didn’t walk anyone and did add 2 more Ks to give him 6 in 4 innings of work this spring.

The Ugly

The Cubs offense scored just enough to win, but they managed only 1 hit the entire game and that came way back in the 3rd inning, so that was it for the day. This wasn’t their best lineup but it did have several regulars in it (Fowler, Rizzo, La Stella, Baez, Montero, etc.)

On Deck

The Cubs are back at it tomorrow against the Padres at 3:05 (CST). Jon Lester gets the start and he is expected to go at least 4 innings, but the efficiency of his pitching thus far could translate into 5 innings easily.
