Cubs Acquire Left-Hander Giovanni Soto From Cleveland
The Chicago Cubs acquired left-handed pitcher Giovanni Soto from Cleveland yesterday in exchange for cash considerations. Soto is 24 years old and hails from Puerto Rico. He spent all of his professional baseball career to date in the minor leagues except for a brief peek at the majors for the Indians in 2015 over six games.
Soto started his professional career with Detroit after they selected him in the 21st round in the 2009 draft. He was dealt to Cleveland in 2010 as part of the deal that sent Jhonny Peralta to Detroit.
Soto was a starting pitcher until he finally was moved to the bullpen in 2013, where he’s proven at the minor league level that he can be an effective reliever.
To make room for him on the Cubs’ 40-man roster, Kyle Schwarber was moved from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. The new Cubs reliever has multiple options remaining for the Cubs to use should they want to bring him up the the major league club in the near future.
