Injury Update: Matt Szczur Could be Back Soon with Heyward Injury
As we reported on Wednesday, Matt Szczur has been working his way back from the DL on a rehab assignment with the Tennessee Smokies.
Matt played in his first game for the Smokies on Thursday, Friday’s game was rained out. He went 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored. He led off, playing center field, and had two plate appearances for the Smokies. In addition to his walk he also struck out before being removed from the game after playing four innings.
Jason Heyward was injured in last night’s game against the Giants. That leaves the Cubs a man short in the outfield for however long Jason is out — he’s scheduled for an MRI later today. The Cubs will rely more on Jorge Soler, Kris Bryant and possibly Ben Zobrist to fill in for Heyward but expect to see Matt Szczur back soon, perhaps as early as this weekend, to help fill in for Heyward while he’s out.
This is a fluid situation and we will be sure to update you as soon as we hear more.
