Injury Update: Dexter Fowler Making (small) Strides in South Bend (*UPDATE*), will Miss All-star Game
Dexter Fowler started his rehab assignment on Friday with the South Bend Cubs. In two at-bats as the designated hitter he went 0-for-2 with 2 walks.
Fowler walked in his first two plate appearances. He grounded into a double play in the bottom of the sixth inning and struck out swinging in the bottom of the ninth.
South Bend plays Bowling Green tonight at 6:05 PM CDT and Dexter is scheduled to start in center field. If everything goes well for Fowler, it’s expected that he would be available to play in his first all-star game on Tuesday, July 12.
UPDATE:
It looks like now Dexter Fowler will not make the start for South Bend tonight.

In addition, the team announced that Dexter will not participate in the all-star game, which is a real bummer for him. He’s overcome quite a lot to put himself in position to be an all-star. We spoke about it early in the year, Dex went all-out to prepare for free agency this past off-season, only to get rebuffed by other teams. He came back to sign a short-term deal with the Cubs and had an incredible start to the season this year.
For now, the plans are for Fowler to continue rehabbing the hamstring after the all-star break. So it’s not clear exactly when he’ll return, but it looks like it will be after baseball begins again post ASG.
