Cubs Clips: Russell & Bryant Smash Cubs’ Biggest 2016 Home Runs (BONUS VIDEO: Kingman’s 550-Foot HR)

Something unusual, and usually fun, always seems to happen when teams play at Coors Field. Luckily, it’s the Rockies and not the Cubs that have to play half of their games there. Although, if it were the Cubs can you even fathom how many runs they’d score there?

As a small example of how the Cubs hit at Coors Field, I present to you exhibits A and B. Exhibit A is a monster 469-foot home run to deep center field hit by Kris Bryant during Saturday’s game. It was the 6th longest home run hit this season at Coors Field (via ESPN Home Run Tracker).

Exhibit B is an equally impressive, moon-shot home run that was hit by Addison Russell in Sunday’s game that travelled 465 feet.

So, of course this made me wonder exactly what are the longest home runs ever hit at Coors Field. I came across an article from CBS Denver that had this list from June 2015.

1. Mike Piazza (Dodgers) – 496 feet (Sept., 26, 1997)
2. Giancarlo Stanton (Marlins) – 494 feet (Aug. 17, 2012)
3. Larry Walker (Rockies) – 494 feet (Aug. 31, 1997)
4. Barry Bonds (Giants) – 492 feet (Aug. 27, 2002)
5. Sammy Sosa (Cubs) – 490 feet (Aug. 10, 2002)
6. Barry Bonds (Giants) – 488 feet (Sept. 9, 2001)
7. Andres Galarraga (Rockies) – 487 feet (Aug. 28, 1997)
8. Larry Walker (Rockies) – 483 feet (June 22, 1999)
9. Ray Lankford (Cardinals) – 483 feet (May 19, 1996)
10. Jim Edmonds (Cardinals) – 482 feet (April 4, 2001)

And the longest home run hit in a current major league ballpark? That would be the Chicago Cubs very own, Dave Kingman’s 550-foot home run hit off Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ron Reed on May 7, 1979 (via Mitchell & Ness). It was Kingman’s third home run of the game. The Cubs lost the game to the Phillies by the score of 23-22 (!), in extra innings, no less (Box Score).

Clearly the wind was blowing out that day!
