Mike Montgomery (4-5, 2.80 ERA) has been filling in quite nicely for the Chicago Cubs (89-49) since Joe Maddon decided to start using him as a sixth starter. He’s started three games so far for the Cubs since August 20, posting a 4.73 ERA in those starts. His latest outing didn’t go quite as well as his first two – he lasted four innings against the Giants and gave up four earned runs in the process. Of course, the Cubs came back to win that game by the score of 5-4, not to mention they’ve won Montgomery’s other two starts as well.
It’s back to the regulars for tonight’s lineup. The only exception is Chris Coghlan playing left field. He’s in there with the righty, Garza, on the hill while Soler will sit out. If the Cubs can pull out the win tonight they can salvage the series win and put a dent in their magic number, which currently stands at 10.
