CI Recap (8/2/17) – Diamondbacks 3, Cubs 0: Arrieta Strong on Night When Offense Stalled
Jake Arrieta took the hill tonight facing former Cubs farmhand Zack Godley, with Alex Avila making his first appearance in a Cubs uniform, catching and batting fifth. Both pitchers were on their game.
In the top of the 6th inning, on a single and subsequent throwing error by Addison Russell, the D-backs had runners on second and third for David Peralta. He lined a ball down the right field line, that gave the D-backs a 2-0 lead.
Other than that, Arrieta was great. The slider/cutter/curve combo was working beautifully and he had nice fastball command. It was just one of those nights when the opposing pitcher was good too.
The Cubs offense was stifled by Godley and the D-backs bullpen. All three of the Cubs hits came in the 1st or 2nd inning. They ended the game 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
Stats that Matter
- Jake had a very good outing – 7.0 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 8 K
- Justin Wilson’s debut was one to forget – 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K
Bottom Line
The Cubs offense could do absolutely nothing and Jake Arrieta was really, really good.
On Deck
The Cubs wrap up the series against the D-Backs on Thursday at 1:20 pm CT. It will be an elite pitching matchup, with Jose Quintana throwing for the Cubs against Zack Greinke.
