Cubs Roster Moves: Pedro Strop Activated from IL, Dillon Maples Optioned to AAA
Joe Maddon said prior to Monday’s game that Pedro Strop would be activated by Wednesday at the latest, and it appears the Cubs want their interim closer back as soon as possible. Despite Jon Lester saving the bullpen by pitching seven innings of one-run ball, Strop might be needed against a hot Rockies team that comes to Wrigley having won nine of their last 10 games.
Even though he has made only 12 appearances for the Cubs, during which time he never really settled in, Strop’s presence solidifies a bullpen that has been been anything but consistent lately. Prior to returning, he made three rehab appearances for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, yielding no runs on one hit and one walk while striking out two. He needed only 27 total pitches (19 strikes) to complete three innings, the kind of efficiency you love to see.
In order to make room on the active roster, Dillon Maples was optioned back to Triple-A Iowa. Now maybe the Cubs can option another pitcher or two after signing/trading for additional relievers.
