Weather Forces Cardinals to Play Back-to-Back Doubleheaders, 11 Games in 9 Days
With their win Friday afternoon, the Cubs pulled to within a game of the Cardinals for the division lead. That’s where it remained throughout the evening, as inclement weather in St. Louis forced the postponement of their game with Cincinnati. While not a big deal under most circumstances, the timing has led to a particularly nasty scheduling snafu for the Redbirds.
They already had one doubleheader scheduled for this weekend, but the limited time remaining in the season forces them to play another. So that’s back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, giving the Cards 11 games in nine days without an off-day. And that’s just part of the trouble.
The Cardinals play 11 games over the next 9 days without an off-day, including doubleheaders today and tomorrow.
Cubs enter play Saturday 1.0 games behind STL.

As Sticky Fingaz once shouted, bu-bu-but wait it gets worse. Because they have a day game on Monday, the Cardinals will have five first pitches over the course of 49 hours. Boy, you just hate to see it.
With a day game Monday at Busch, #Cardinals are about to have five first pitches in the span of 49 hours and play five games in 53 hours, give or take. #MLB #stlcards https://t.co/jtMIPRDq1f

St. Louis has an open date on Monday, September 9, then they head to Colorado for three before coming home to face the Brewers and Nationals for three apiece. And that’s where things get really interesting, since the Cubs and Cards will square off over seven of the season’s final 10 games. With four at Wrigley and three in St. Lou to finish, this may come down to which team is most fresh.
Unless they’re forced to fly into a hurricane on one of their two remaining off-days, that team could well be the Cubs.
