Cubs Option Taylor Davis to AAA, Roster Now at 34
The Cubs announced Thursday that Taylor Davis has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa, a move that should have no consequence on the remainder of the season. They didn’t need the spot due to roster expansion, but Davis wasn’t going to see the field with three other catchers also active. As good as it is to have guys around for the experience and camaraderie, there’s the simple matter of not having much physical space when you’re carrying extra players.
The roster now stands at 34, with potential for things to expand or contract further if and when David Bote is recalled. Bote was optioned to make room for Ben Zobrist this past Friday and is expected to return after a requisite 10-day period, but could be brought back earlier as an injury replacement. He was not in the lineup for Iowa’s PCL playoff game Wednesday night, fueling speculation that the Cubs were taking precautions.
Or maybe the I-Cubs just wanted to hold Bote back as a potential emergency catcher.
