Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/5/21): Cleveland 10, Cubs 4 F/7 – Hoerner Homers, Cubs Lose for First Time
The Cubs finally hit their first patch of adversity in Cactus League play with a loss against Cleveland on Friday. It was still mostly good news, however, as Nico Hoerner and several other players had nice days. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
Two four-run innings allowed by Cubs pitchers doomed them on Friday.
Key Moment
Bobby Bradley hit a three-run homer off of Dillon Maples in the top of the 6th to give Cleveland an 8-4 lead.
Stats That Matter
- Alec Mills had good movement on all his pitches Friday: 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 K, and 1 BB.
- Hoerner mashed a solo shot and also had a well-placed run-scoring single to right.
- Craig Kimbrel showed some rust in his debut: 0.1 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 1 K, 0 BB.
- Javy Báez had to leave after getting hit in the arm by a pitch. Luckily, it was just a bruise and he should be fine.
Bottom Line
Mills is one of several guys fighting for a rotation spot, so his strong effort will help his case. Hoerner is more fire than man at this point, mashing everything in sight.
On Deck
