Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/29/21): Cubs 7, D-Backs 1 – Cubs Win Behind Contreras and Hoerner Home Runs
The Chicago Cubs wrapped up their spring slate with a bang Monday afternoon. They pounded the Arizona Diamondbacks at Sloan Park and now head north for Opening Day on Thursday at historic Wrigley Field. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
The Cubs jumped on Arizona starter Caleb Smith for seven runs and put the game on ice early.
Key Moment
Nico Hoerner blasted a three-run homer off of Smith in the 4th inning to give the Cubs a 7-1 lead.
Stats That Matter
- Zach Davies was very solid, as he has been all spring: 3.1 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 K, and 2 BB.
- Willson Contreras was perfect in three at-bats with a double and a solo home run.
- Joc Pederson had a two-run double off the D-Backs lefty starter.
Bottom Line
The Cubs made it through the spring in good shape and now get set for Pirates Thursday. It’s hard to project anything from exhibition numbers, but we can be glad the season is starting with the team healthy and ready to go.
On Deck
The Cubs welcome the Pirates to Wrigley Field Thursday at 1:20pm CT. Kyle Hendricks is starting for the Cubs against Chad Kuhl for the Pirates in a game available on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
