Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/19/21): Marlins 11, Cubs 1 – Duvall, Marlins Blast Cubs Again
The Cubs put up a second consecutive poor effort Saturday afternoon against the Marlins. Miami jumped on Jake Arrieta immediately and never looked back.
Adam Duvall capped off a sloppy 1st inning with a two-run homer to give the fish a 3-0 lead. Arrieta had to work very hard Saturday and the results were reflective of that. Duvall hit another two-run jack, his fourth of the weekend, in the 3rd to bury the Cubs.
Pablo López completely shut down Chicago hitters in seven one-hit frames. Miami launched two more homers in what ended up as an 11-1 rout. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
Arrieta was not competitive early on and the Cubs offense could do nothing.
Key Moment
A routine infield pop up by Jesus Sánchez landed safely between third baseman Kris Bryant and catcher José Lobatón in the 5th inning. The “single” scored a run to make it 7-0.
Stats That Matter
- Jake’s velocity was up, but the results didn’t change: 3 IP, 6 R, 4 ER, 6 H, 5 K, and 0 BB.
- Eric Sogard singled and pitched the 9th.
- Jason Heyward hit a solo homer in the 8th.
Bottom Line
David Ross has asked for more from starters, he is not getting that at all from Arrieta. May be time to ask some big questions and possibly move on from the former ace.
On Deck
The Cubs look to avoid the sweep Sunday at 1:20pm CT. Alec Mills faces Zach Thompson in a game on Marquee and 670 The Score.
