Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/25/21): Cubs 5, D-Backs 1 – Bryzzo Bombs Lead Cubs to Win
The Cubs were hoping to take a series against the Diamondbacks and give their fans something to cheer about after dropping three of four to the Cardinals amid swirling trade rumors. Well, they did just that behind what could have been a farewell power display by two of their best players.
Kris Bryant gave Chicago the lead in the top of the 1st with a two-run homer off of Caleb Smith. Anthony Rizzo followed immediately with a solo shot to make it back-to-back for Bryzzo.

David Bote marked his return from the IL with a bang, blasting a two-run shot to left in the 4th inning. Trevor Williams was up to the task of holding that five-run lead on Sunday as he pitched into the 7th without allowing a run to score.
Arizona threatened a couple times in the late innings but could only get a single run on the board before Craig Kimbrel came on and slammed the door on the 5-1 victory. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
Williams had a quality start that kept Arizona from getting back into the game. It was also nice to see some home runs from the Cubs.
Key Moment
Bote’s home run padded the Cubs’ lead and removed a lot of the drama from the later innings. These next couple months are important for players like him to make a case for playing time in 2022.
Stats That Matter
- Williams put together what was possibly his best start of the season: 6.1 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 6 K, and 0 BB.
- Willson Contreras drew two walks out of the leadoff spot.
Bottom Line
The trade deadline is right upon us, which means those could have been the final back-to-back homers for Bryant and Rizzo. If so, it’s been quite a ride. And who knows, maybe they’ll still get a chance to keep the souvenir company together.
On Deck
The Cubs have a four-game series with the Reds at Wrigley Field starting Monday at 7:05pm CT. Kyle Hendricks takes on Wade Miley in a contest airing on Marquee and 670 The Score.
