Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/22/21): Royals 9, Cubs 1 – Cubs Swept Again at Home
The Cubs continued their downward slide Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field. The Kansas City Royals plastered Chicago en route to a lopsided victory and series sweep.
Alec Mills did not have it on Sunday and the Royals used a small ball attack to bury the Cubs in a big hole. KC only had two extra bass hits out of a total of 15, but they managed to score nine runs in the middle innings to put the game on ice.
A 4th inning Matt Duffy single scored the only run for Chicago on Sunday. The rest of the day the offense was held completely down by young Royal starter Carlos Hernández. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
The Royals jumped out to a huge lead and with the Cubs offense in the state it’s in, even a small lead would have been safe.
Key Moment
The Cubs had two on with one out in the top of the 1st inning and failed to score any runs. Kansas City started their offense onslaught immediately after.
Stats That Matter
- Mills is a pitch-to-contact guy and sometimes that doesn’t work out: 4 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 11 H, 5 K, and 0 BB.
- Frank Schwindel had two hits and is batting .315 on the season.
- Ian Happ doubled, walked, and scored a run as he shows signs of life.
Bottom Line
The Cubs have now lost a team-record 13-straight home games this yea and their drive for a better draft position is going swimmingly.
On Deck
The Cubs kick off a three-game series with the Rockies starting Monday at 7:05pm CT. Kyle Hendricks takes on Antonio Senzatela in a game airing on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
