Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (Game 2 – 5/7/22): Dodgers 6, Cubs 2 – Dodgers Walk All Over Cubs, Take Twin-bill
The Cubs looked to salvage the final game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Wrigley. Chicago did a much better job of keeping the Dodgers hitters in check during the nightcap, but one bad inning was enough to give LA the sweep.
Willson Contreras hit a triple off of starter Tyler Anderson in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Cubs designated hitter was able to score just ahead of a throw to the plate on an Ian Happ ground out to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Chicago opener Daniel Norris ran into big problems in the top of the 2nd, loading the bases on three consecutive walks. Keegan Thompson took over in relief and almost escaped the jam, however a two-out walk to Hanser Alberto tied the score. Mookie Betts followed and cleared the bases with a three-run double down the third base line.
Contreras crushed a solo home run in the 5th inning to cut the Dodgers lead to two runs. The Cubs did not really threaten after that and Betts put the game on ice with a two-run jack in the 9th inning. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
They walked nine Dodger hitters and five of those walks came in to score. It was the difference in the game.
Key Moment
If Thompson had been able to get Alberto the Cubs might have been able to build on their advantage. It’s hard to blame Keegan, however, because he was placed in an incredibly difficult spot.
Stats That Matter
- Contreras had three hits in total on Saturday, hopefully he can get hot and boost the offense.
- David Robertson had his first blemish of 2022 when he gave up the home run to Mookie.
- Patrick Wisdom had to come out of the game in the 6th after suffering an ankle injury
Bottom Line
The Cubs have now lost 13 of their last 16 games and there’s not much positive to say. The law of averages would make you think a good stretch of baseball is going to happen at some point. All I can say is I hope it happens soon.
On Deck
Chicago tries to avoid the sweep at 6:08pm CT Sunday night. Marcus Stroman will have to outdo Dodgers ace Walker Buehler on the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball telecast.
