Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/18/22): Rockies 4, Cubs 3 – Big Day From Gomes Not Enough
The Cubs were attempting to take the series with a win against the Rockies at Wrigley Field on Sunday. The home team fell behind early and a comeback attempt came up short.
Colorado jumped on rookie starter Javier Assad to grab a big early lead. Randal Grichuk‘s single knocked in two during a three-run 1st inning. Connor Joe added a solo home run in the top of the 2nd and it was 4-0.
Yan Gomes single-handedly tried to bring the Cubs back on Sunday afternoon. He hit an opposite-field two-run single in the bottom of the 3rd and then blasted a solo home run in the 6th to cut the deficit to 4-3.
That was as close as Chicago would get, however, and the Rockies would seal the one-run victory. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
The Cubs offense is just too weak to consistently rally back from an early hole like Sunday.
Eye on the Future
- Just a tough day for Assad: 2 IP, 4 R, 2 H, 3 K, and 4 BB.
Taking Note
- Gomes had three hits on Sunday as his big September continues.
- David Bote had a pair of knocks as well.
Bottom Line
Chicago’s offensive unit wasn’t great before injuries knocked out several key bats and now it is even worse. That kind of hitting ineptitude is hard to overcome.
On Deck
The Cubs head to Miami for three with the Marlins starting Monday at 5:40pm CT. Wade Miley takes on Edward Cabrera in a contest available on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
