Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/20/22): Cubs 2, Marlins 1 – Cubs Bunt By Fish for Win
The Cubs attempted to bounce back Tuesday night from an ugly loss against the Marlins on Monday. The game was a pitcher’s duel that Chicago was able to pull out thanks to a late manufactured run.
Two struggling offenses could do very little against starters Adrian Sampson and Pablo Lopez. The Marlins took the lead on an infield hit by Jordan Groshans that scored JJ Bleday from third in the bottom of the 2nd inning
The Cubs finally got to Lopez in the top of the 7th inning when David Bote hit a long solo home run to tie the store at 1. Chicago loaded the bases on a hit by pitch and a pair of bunts in the 8th to set up a go-ahead sacrifice fly from Bote.
Adbert Alzolay came on in relief and tossed two impressive innings. Brandon Hughes was able to pick up the save despite allowing a leadoff double. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
Sampson and the bullpen were outstanding Tuesday allowing the offense just enough room to win.
Eye on the Future
- P.J. Higgins had a pair of hits on Tuesday including a double.
- Esteban Quiroz had his first career hit and added a bunt single later in the game. He also made a couple of slick plays in the field at second base.
Taking Note
- Sampson used a couple double plays early in the game to get out of jams but then pitched very well: 6 IP, 1 R, 8 H, 3 K, and 1 BB.
Bottom Line
It is always nice to get a victory but this game did not really have much to do with 2023. It certainly will mean a lot to Esteban Quiroz, otherwise it’s on to the next game.
On Deck
Chicago looks to win the series Wednesday at 5:40pm CT. Marcus Stroman faces Jesus Lúzardo with a broadcast available on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
