Davis, Alcántara, PCA Optioned or Reassigned as Cubs Trim Spring Roster by 10
The Cubs announced 10 more cuts from the spring roster on Friday morning, including some big names who’ve been getting a good deal of playing time with the big club. Alexander Canario and Brennen Davis have been optioned to Triple-A Iowa; Ben Brown, Ryan Jensen, and Miguel Amaya were optioned to Double-A Tennessee, and Kevin Alcántara has been optioned to High-A South Bend.
Non-roster invitees Pete Crow-Armstrong, Danis Correa, Jordan Holloway, and Ben Leeper were all reassigned to minor-league camp. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with PCA, who made some terrific adjustments with High-A South Bend last season. His defense is already MLB-ready, but his plate approach needs to be further refined before he’s ready for the show. An assignment to Double-A Tennessee makes sense.
Chicago’s spring roster of 56 players consists of 33 pitchers (13 non-roster invitees), four catchers (two non-roster invitees), 11 infielders (three non-roster invitees), six outfielders (two non-roster invitees) and two infielder/outfielders.
