Chicago Cubs Lineup (7/23/23): Hoerner Leads Off, Amaya Catching, Taillon Starting

I missed yesterday’s lineup due to a youth baseball tourney and this one will be brief for the same reason. Lord willing, the sailing will be smoother moving forward.

The Cubs have won two straight after dropping the series opener to the Cardinals in lethargic fashion. Cody Bellinger looks more and more like a big part of the team’s future, whether it’s via extension or significant trade return, and Dansby Swanson coming back from the IL provides another boost. Then you’ve got the trio of Nico Hoerner, Ian Happ, and Seiya Suzuki, which has combined for 25 in the last six games in the wake of a collective freakout about their concurrent slumps.

All that offense might need to be on display with Jameson Taillon going, though the big righty has been better over his last two outings. He’ll be squaring off with Jordan Montgomery, a large lefty sinkerballer who gets a lot of grounders and keeps the ball in the yard as well as anyone. He’ll give up about a hit an inning on average, however, so the Cubs can take advantage of their propensity for playing station-to-station baseball.

Hoerner leads off at second, followed by Suzuki in right, Happ in left, and Bellinger in center. Swanson is at short, Yan Gomes is the DH, Trey Mancini is at first, and Miguel Amaya is the catcher. Patrick Wisdom rounds out the lineup at third base.

First pitch is at 1:20pm CT on Marquee and 670 The Score.
