Cubs Down to Just 56 Backup Catchers as Blue Jays Claim Brian Serven
What was your favorite part of the Brian Serven Era on the North Side? The backup catcher was claimed off waivers from the Rockies on January 5, giving the Cubs 57 backup catchers by my unofficial count, then he was DFA’d six days later to make room on the roster for Yency Almonte and Michael Busch. Serven’s time in the organization officially came to a close on Tuesday, when the Blue Jays claimed him to fill their 40-man.
The Cubs must now pray either Joe Hudson or Jorge Alfaro can survive through camp in order to provide veteran depth. Unless, that is, some of those moves Jed Hoyer teased during Cubs Convention include bringing in even more backstops on minor-league deals. I’m sure that would go over well.
