Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/10/24): Padres 10, Cubs 2 – Hendricks Hammered in Loss
The Cubs wrapped up their three-game set in San Diego Wednesday afternoon hoping for a series victory. Unfortunately, Kyle Hendricks had a third consecutive ugly performance and the Padres cruised to a win.
San Diego took the lead on a series of soft singles in the bottom of the 2nd, followed by a hit from Luis Campusano and a groundout by Jackson Merrill to make it 2-0. The Cubs did their only damage of the game the 4th when Michael Busch smoked a line drive two-run home run off of Dylan Cease to tie the score.
The Padres got those runs right back in the bottom of the frame on a Jurickson Profar RBI double, followed by Ha-Seong Kim tripling and scoring later in the inning. Hendricks went back out for the 6th and surrendered homers to Jake Cronenworth (solo) and Profar (two-run) to put the contest on ice .
San Diego would go on to add three more and in a 10-2 rout. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Padres immediately responded with two runs when the Cubs tied it in the 4th and took away any chance for them to build momentum.
Why the Cubs Lost
The offense did not do much but it was a bad start that hurt them on Wednesday afternoon and they could never recover from it.
Why the Cubs Lost
- Hendricks has given up 17 runs this season in just 12.2 innings pitched, which is not sustainable if you want to stay in the major leagues.
- Busch was the only player to do much of anything with a pair of walks in addition to his homer.
Bottom Line
Hendricks is an all-time great Cub and was an invaluable part of the 2016 championship team. Even as he has declined somewhat with age, he has still contributed to the rotation in recent years. His start to this season, however, has been a complete disaster and something has to change in a hurry. I really hope things don’t end like this but baseball is unforgiving and the ride might almost be over.
On Deck
After a day off on Thursday, the Cubs travel to Seattle for three games with the Mariners starting Friday at 8:40pm CT. Jordan Wicks faces off against Bryce Miller in the matchup airing exclusively on Apple TV+ and 670 The Score.
