Patrick Wisdom May Be Headed Back to Chicago

Patrick Wisdom has been out since late spring training with a back strain, but he’s been raking for Triple-A Iowa and may be headed to Chicago for their extended weekend series against the Marlins. Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register reported that Wisdom left Wednesday’s game in the 4th inning, then noted that he was heading to the locker room with his gear and did not appear to be injured.

With a double and a walk on Wednesday, Wisdom is batting .407 with a 1.417 OPS in nine games with the I-Cubs. A little righty power will be in order since the Marlins have at least two lefties slated to start following a TBD hurler on Thursday. Of course, that would mean clearing a space on the roster that doesn’t appear to have any injured players.

Nick Madrigal and Miles Mastrobuoni would seem to be the most likely casualties, but the latter is starting in left field in the series finale against the Diamondbacks. It’s also possible the Cubs could swap Wisdom for Alexander Canario, though that seems like a bit of an odd move because they could have simply activated Wisdom earlier in the week. Garrett Cooper is another option, but he’s hit really well in limited action and his swing is well-suited to Wrigley Field.

We also have to remember that there will be other moves, namely Jameson Taillon being activated for Thursday’s game. The Cubs could also use some fresh arms in the bullpen and can’t really play a pitcher short for the sake of getting Wisdom’s bat onto the bench. More on this as it develops.

Let’s go with Mastrobuoni just because he seems to have the least defined niche at the moment.

Update: Be ready for all manner of “He sucks, trade him” comments. Also, A.J. Puk starting Thursday give the Fish three southpaws in the series.
