Chicago Cubs Lineup (5/4/24): Wisdom DH, PCA Batting 8th, Taillon Tossing
There’ll be no in-depth look at today’s matchup because, frankly, I’m not happy with the way the Cubs have played lately and it doesn’t even seem to matter who they’re facing. Depleted roster or no, scratching out just one run at a time against guys who’ve been hammered by pretty much everyone else just isn’t going to work. The Cubs are still in a great place, all things considered, it’s just frustrating and I’ve got a whole lot else to worry about today.
Jameson Taillon has looked great since returning from a stiff back in spring training, so it should just be a matter of providing him with enough support to make his start matter. The lineup isn’t particularly noteworthy, so I’ll just direct you to the tweet below rather than typing it all out.
They’re up against rookie righty Tobias Myers, who is making his third career start. A strike-thrower who has walked only one batter in 10 innings, Myers likes to work up in the zone with his 93 mph fastball and will spray the cutter around quite a bit. He has a tendency to catch too much of the heart of the plate and his mistakes have been costly, leading to three homers already.
The cutter has been victimized, but Myers has really struggled with the changeup even though he’s only thrown it 12 times. Right-handed hitters have all three homers, leading them to a .667 slugging percentage in the early going, and the Cubs could desperately use some more of that. Actually, they could use some more runs however they can get them.
Myers doesn’t figure to put too many guys on base with free passes and he’s able to miss bats, so this one may come down to making the most out of those inevitable mistake strikes.
First pitch is at 1:20pm CT on Marquee and 670 The Score.
