Cubs Recall RHP Porter Hodge, Place RHP Colten Brewer on 15-Day IL
It just wouldn’t be a normal day if we weren’t talking about another Cubs player going on the IL. Righty Colten Brewer has a low back strain and will be on the shelf for a while, so the team has called up Porter Hodge to help in the bullpen. Hodge has a mid-to-upper-90s fastball that can touch 99 and he pairs it with a big slider that gets lots of swings and misses.
His 4.80 ERA doesn’t say much, but 26 strikeouts in 15 innings tells you Hodge can miss bats with the best of them. He’s also walked 12 and given up 13 hits, so the Ks are a must. More on this move in the press release below.
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Porter Hodge from Triple-A Iowa and placed right-handed pitcher Colten Brewer on the 15-day injured list with a low back strain (retroactive to May 14).
Hodge, 23, is 1-1 with a 6.55 ERA (8 ER/11.0 IP) in 10 relief appearances with Triple-A Iowa this season. He started the 2024 campaign with Double-A Tennessee where he pitched 4.0 scoreless innings in two relief appearances. Hodge will make his major league debut with the Cubs.
The Salt Lake City native is in his fifth professional season with the Cubs after being drafted by Chicago in the 13th round of the 2019 Draft. He was added to the Cubs 40-man roster on Nov. 14, 2023. Last season, he helped Tennessee to their first Southern League championship since 1978, going 6-7 with a 5.13 ERA (46 ER/80.2 IP in 35 games, 12 starts, with the Smokies. Porter currently sits as the Cubs No. 24 prospect according to MLB Pipeline.
Brewer, 31, has made seven relief appearances for the Cubs, posting a 3.09 ERA (4 ER/11.2 IP) this season.
