Nick Madrigal Suffers Fractured Hand from HBP, Daniel Palencia Day to Day After Exiting Rehab Outing Early

Nick Madrigal was hit on the hand by a pitch Wednesday night in his first game with the Iowa Cubs, and the organization announced Thursday that he suffered a fracture as a result. He had previously walked and doubled home a run in the game. Madrigal is now heading back to Chicago for a more in-depth diagnosis to determine the next steps in his recovery process.

The Cubs could open a 40-man spot by placing him on the 60-day IL if it’s serious enough, though they’d still need to find room on the active roster in order to call up reinforcements.

Daniel Palencia left that same game with a trainer in the top of the 5th after recording two outs. He alternated walks with a strikeout and sac fly, then walked another batter and departed. Craig Counsell had no additional information on the issue prior to Thursday’s game in Cincinnati but said the reliever is day-to-day.
