Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/30/24): Brewers 7, Cubs 1 – Cubs Slammed Again in Milwaukee

The Cubs began the series finale against the Brewers on a high note Sunday afternoon, taking the lead on the first batter of the game. It was all downhill from there, however, as Milwaukee used one big inning against Kyle Hendricks to earn a blowout victory.

Nico Hoerner smacked Freddy Peralta‘s second pitch of the afternoon over the left field wall for a solo home run to put the Cubs ahead 1-0. Cody Bellinger picked up a bloop single later in the 1st inning for what would be Chicago’s last hit of the game.

The Brewers broke it wide open on Hendricks in the bottom of the 4th beginning with an infield single and a two-run shot to center by Christian Yelich that put the home team up 2-1. That would have been enough to win but Milwaukee didn’t stop there, bringing in another run and loading the bases with two out for leadoff hitter Brice Turang. Turang jumped on an inside fastball and hit a grand slam that buried the Cubs in a 7-1 hole.

It was all academic after that with the North Siders getting just a single baserunner on a walk in the final five frames and going down to a 7-1 defeat. (Box score)

Key Moment

In the 4th inning, Ian Happ lost a high fly ball from Rhys Hoskins in the sun and it dropped for a hit. The Brewers would go on to score five more runs in the frame.

Why the Cubs Lost

The offense did almost nothing after the first inning and Milwaukee made the absolute most out of their scoring chance.

Stats That Matter

• Hendricks had no margin for error Sunday and he made a couple big mistakes in that 4th inning: 3.2 IP, 7 R, 7 H, 3 K, and 1 BB.
• The Cubs were 11-16 in June after going 10-18 in May.

Bottom Line

This was the same old song and dance with another lackluster performance by a wildly disappointing team. I don’t blame anyone for starting to think about next year.
