A Tip of the Recap – April 28th
The Cubs scored all 6 of their runs with 2 outs tonight, they stole 5 bases and had great pitching performances to lead them to victory by a score of 6-2.
The Good
Dexter Fowler has been one of the best additions from this offseason. His presence in that leadoff spot had been sorely missed on this team. He was 3 for 4 tonight with 2 RBI to bring his average up to .288; he also stole his 6th base of the season.
Starlin Castro had 3 hits, an RBI, and 2 runs scored and is now hitting .342 on the year.
Junior Lake (recently called up from Iowa) had a couple hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Kris Bryant added an RBI single to give him 10 RBI on the season, which is 2nd on the team behind Castro’s 12. He is hitting .350 and his approach at the plate is something that I don’t think the Cubs have seen in a young player like him.
Addison Russell is starting to settle in a little bit and had an RBI (his 5th) double and drew a full-count walk.
Travis Wood was outstanding tonight; he went 7 innings, giving up just 2 runs (both earned) on 5 hits, 0 walks, and 9 Ks.
Zac Rosscup has looked great since being called up from Iowa and I think he is probably a part of the bullpen for the foreseeable future (as long as Schlitter isn’t, then I will be happy).
Jason Motte came in and finished out the game with a perfect inning in the 9th.
The Cubs stole 5 bases as a team tonight, including 4 on double steals. Anthony Rizzo and Dexter Fowler are tied for the team lead with 6.
The Bad
Jorge Soler had 2 walks (good), but he also had 2 strikeouts (bad); he has seen his BA dip down to .260. There is no denying that he can take a walk, but I must admit that the Ks are a bit more than I expected.
The Ugly
Nothing ugly about this one that saw the Cubs get an early lead and hold onto it for the victory.
On Deck
The Cubs will go for the sweep tomorrow night at 7:05 PM (CST). Kyle Hendricks (0-0, 5.74) will get the ball for the Cubs and Gerrit Cole (3-0, 2.19) comes in pretty hot and will look to slow down the Cubs mighty offense.
