Postgame Wrap: Cubs v Dodgers; The Willson Contreras Show – VIDEO
Jesus Guzman hit a big 2-run home run in the top of the ninth to take the lead 5-4. The Cubs relievers could not hold that lead and gave up back-to-back bases load walks in the bottom of the ninth inning, leading to a 6-5 Dodger win.
On a happier note, Willson Contreras is doing everything he can to make it as difficult as possible to keep him in the minors this year. He looks that good, going 3 for 3, scoring one run and making a sterling defensive play to pick off Chase Utley on a tremendous throw to first base. I really wonder if there isn’t a scenario where the Cubs would trade Montero (who, by the way, has had a monster spring himself) and bring Contreras up to play full-time. If there’s any time to do it, why not this year? I just think he’s way too valuable to keep stashed away in the minors.
Here’s video of the pick off at first base:
Trevor Cahill ended up going three innings, giving up two hits, two runs, one walk and getting one strikeout. It was two consecutive wild pitches in the second inning that led to both runs scoring. Overall, a somewhat sloppy performance but at this point it’s most important to just get in some quality innings .
Adam Warren came on in relief and (also) had a mediocre performance. I’m waiting to see Warren perform well so I can justify the Starlin Castor trade. I admit it, I was vested in Starlin and I would like to think we didn’t just give him away, even if it was to clear salary space.
Cubs have Kyle Hendricks on the mound tomorrow against the Oakland Athletics at 3:05 CST. It will be a trip down memory lane for the Cubs as they return to their old spring training digs at Hohokam Stadium.
