Cubs Cut Roster by 9: Almora, Andreoli, Williams, Perez, Negron, Guzman, Machi, Murton, Gomes
The Cubs cut the spring training roster further today by nine, as expected, bringing the number on the current roster to 36. That means there will be 11 more cuts to come before they get to the final 25-man roster to start the regular season. All the cuts today were in camp as non-roster invitees.
The players are Albert Almora OF, John Andreoli OF, Ryan Williams RHP, Juan Perez OF, Kristopher Negron INF, Jesus Guzman 1B, Jean Machi RHP, Matt Murton OF, and Brandon Gomes RHP.
Of these players perhaps the biggest impact this spring was from John Andreoli. In thirty-three at-bats over twenty games he hit .303/.351/.727 with four home runs, eight RBIs and six runs. He had a great spring and I won’t be surprised if we hear his name again in the near future, be it as part of a trade or on the field. Last year with AAA Iowa he hit .277/.372/.401 over 379 at-bats, so he certainly has the ability to play at a high level consistently.
