Russell Leads Cubs to Win Over Brewers, Hendricks Solid on Chilly Night at Wrigley Field

It was bound to happen soon, it’s been a little while. Addison Russell got his chance to help lead the Cubs to victory and that’s exactly what he did. Russell heated things up on a chilly night at Wrigley Field in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out, two-run triple. Before that, the Cubs could only score one run on a sacrifice fly ball in the bottom of the fifth inning by Dexter Fowler. Cubs do everything they needed to tonight to get the win 4-3 over the Brewers (Box Score).

Pitching in

Kyle Hendricks had a strong outing over the five innings he pitched. He came out in the fifth for pinch-hitter Tommy La Stella, who walked. Hendricks, meanwhile, finished the night giving up only one run on two hits and a walk, while striking out four batters. It was his best outing of the year.

Adam Warren also pitched well when he came on in relief for Hendricks. Warren held the Brewers hitless for two critical innings in a close game.

Rondon came on in relief and put it away, after giving up a two-out single to keep it interesting.

Hitting it

The night started out very slow for the Cubs, who weren’t able to get a hit until Kris Bryant doubled in the bottom of the fourth inning. That was after the Brewers had already put up one run on the scoreboard. The Russell double in the bottom of the sixth made it 3-1.

The Cubs added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as Rizzo knocked in his 22nd RBI of the year by driving in Baez with a timely two-out single single. Good thing too because the Cubs would need that run after the Brewers, and Pedro Strop, made it interesting by scoring two runs making it 4-3. And that’s how it would end.

Next up

Cubs play the Brewer tomorrow night at Wrigley with Lord Jake taking the mound at 7:05 CDT. It’s Jake’s first outing since his no-hitter against the Reds.
