Matt Szczur Injury Update – Heading to DL, Ryan Kalish Called Up

DSC_0964Matt Szczur strained his right hamstring in last night’s game in Pittsburgh and apparently is heading to the DL.

It seemed like Matt may have sustained the injury when Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole sent a pick-off throw past first baseman John Jaso in the top of the fourth inning. On the play, Matt dove back in to first and then quickly leapt up and advanced to second base on the throw, making it in safely. Matt immediately bent over and was clearly in discomfort after the play, prompting the Cubs’ trainer to come out of the dugout only to be waved back my Matt. Matt stayed in the game and seemed okay after the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning Matt walked and advanced to third on a David Ross two-run single. Ross then attempted to steal second base, which was a clear ploy to try to get Szczur home and it worked. Matt took off towards home plate on the play and the throw by Pirates second baseman Josh Harrison sailed over the head of catcher Francisco Cervelli allowing Szczur to score easily on the play. It was after that play when Szczur complained of soreness in his hamstring. He was removed from the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

According to a tweet by Ryan Kalish’s agent, Mark Pieper, Kalish has been called up and apparently Matt Szczur will be placed on the DL. Ryan has been red-hot this season so far at AAA Iowa batting .368/.471./509.
