A Tip of the Recap – 6/11 (Cubs 8, Barves 2)

Cubs Record: 42-18

W: Jake Arrieta (10-1)

L: Matt Wisler

MVP: Jake Arrieta

It was Jake Arrieta Day at Turner Field Saturday. The Cubs suffered a bad, boring BABIP-y loss Friday, but it truly is a new day every time this team steps on the field. Anthony Rizzo was back in the lineup and Chris Coghlan made his Cubs re-debut starting left. So how did it go?

Jason Heyward stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 1st and launched a solo shot. It’s a really good sign that he’s finding his power of late. He’s got two dingers in five games.

As mentioned earlier, Rizzo was back in the lineup and he put his own influence on this game. The first pitch he saw in the top of the fourth was launched about 30 feet to the left of where Heyward hit his. Rizzo’s hitting streak is up to 8 games and he’s batting well over 400 in that time. He’s back, ladies and gentleman.

Speaking of hitters trying to get out of slumps, Miggy Montero joined the dinger parade only a few at-bats after Rizzo. He launched a 3-run dong to put the Cubs up 5-0. Just an inning later, KB joined his teammates and hit a lined shot out to make it 7-1. Apparently the Cubs can score runs that aren’t on homers because after an Arrieta single, Dexter Fowler hit a double over the head of Ender Inciarte to tack on one more run.

The Good

The Cubs just hit really well today. Every starter got a hit and, as Chris Kamka said, it’s the second time this season they’ve done such a thing.

It was great to see Arrieta bounce back from two of his rougher starts. He went 8 innings, allowed 2 runs, one of which may or may not have been allowed had the neighborhood play been ruled on an earlier at-bat. He had a handful of punch-outs and just was a tour de force with ground balls today. Good to see him return to form.

The Bad

One word: Barves.

The Ugly

The strike zone. It’s redundant to complain about this stuff, but man, what a really bad job. The inside corner was extended by a foot and the calls didn’t seem to go both ways. #RobotUmps
