Watch: Evan Talks with Rob Zastryzny About Mistaken Identity, Poutine, and Cleaning the Bathroom
If you follow me on social media, you may already know about the opportunity I had to work with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at the Cubs Convention. I’ve developed a pretty solid relationship with the Cubs’ advanced-A affiliate over the last couple years, to the extent that they saw fit to have me interview Rob Zastryzny, Jeimer Candelario, and Jason McLeod at their booth Saturday. Whether they’ll ever want anything to do with me again after this remains to be seen, but I had a lot of fun and I don’t think I creeped anyone out too much.
Zastryzny was up first, which was about as perfect as could be. This dude has a great personality and just seems to get it. That’s perhaps a bit vague and trite, though I think you’ll see what I mean when you watch the video below. He totally embodies the mantra I’ve repeated for years about being serious without taking yourself too seriously. Zastryzny has plenty of confidence in his ability and he’s willing to work hard to achieve his goals, but he’s a total goofball at the same time.
Even with baseball at the heart of the interview, we got into topics ranging from his amateur tennis skills, doing chores at home (which would have come in handy as CubsCon closed out), and sharing his Canadian heritage with his friends in Corpus Christi.
