CI Recap (3/11/17) – Cubs 4, Rockies 3: Schwarber, Happ & Jimenez Go Yard in Comeback Win
A comeback win is always fun, even if it is just Spring Training. The Cubs got all four of their runs today from the longball and all three home runs were monster shots. Kyle Schwarber hit his first home run of the Spring, Eloy Jimenez hit his second and Ian Happ topped them both with his third. What’s more, Happ’s bomb was the game-winner (box score).
Jon Lester got in three quality innings of work today, giving up four hits and one run. It felt like one of those “just go out and get your work in” days for Lester. He did strike out four batters and had good command and velocity, so there’s that.
Stats that matter
- Kyle Schwarber looked great swinging the lumber today, going 2-for-3 with that homer and nearly a stolen base (interference was called on Anthony Rizzo)
- Kris Bryant made two uncharacteristic errors on plays he’d normally make. No reason why, other than they just seemed like fluky plays.
- The Cubs bullpen was solid — 6IP, 2H, 2R, 1BB, 3Ks — surrendering two hits
Bottom line
It was good to see the Cubs pitchers pull it together today, particularly after being tagged for no fewer than eight runs in each of their last five games. Not that we were worried, but still, nice to get out of that funk.
On deck
The Cubs travel to their old digs at Hohokam on Sunday to take on the Oakland A’s. Game time tomorrow is 2:05 PM CT.
