Cubs Injury Update: Kris Bryant Day-to-Day with Sprained Left Pinkie
Breaking: Not Kris Bryant’s finger. Whew.
After doubling in his first at-bat, Bryant nearly took off for third when a wild pitch got past Braves catcher Tyler Flowers. But when the ball bounced right back to Flowers off of the brick backstop, Bryant dove back in.
Perhaps anticipating another such miscue from the knuckleballing starter, R.A. Dickey, Bryant again broke for third and was thrown out with room to spare when Flowers picked the ball cleanly.

Sliding headfirst into the bag, the pinkie and ring finger on Bryant’s left hand got caught on Johan Camargo’s cleat and were hyperextended suddenly and awkwardly. The reigning MVP remained on the ground in a mix of pain and regret, the fluke injury a result of his poor baserunning decision. He left the game immediately and was replaced by Tommy La Stella.
Much like another freak play a few weeks ago, also at third base, everyone can breathe a deep sigh of relief. X-rays were negative Bryant is listed as day-to-day with a sprained pinkie. The Cubs have Thursday off, so this may not result in any additional missed time. With this being the bottom finger on his bottom hand, though, lingering discomfort could affect his swing for a little while moving forward.
More on Bryant’s status if and when it’s available.
