Cubs DFA Brett Anderson

Brett Anderson was activated off the 60-day DL only to be immediately designated for assignment by the Cubs.

The lefty pitcher had a 8.18 ERA and 4.51 FIP in six starts for the defending World Series champions before being DFA’d. He’s owed roughly $1.3 million more after he signed an incentive-laded $3.5 million contract in the 2016 offseason.

Although Anderson has been designated, this doesn’t necessarily mean he’s off the team. The Cubs have 10 days to trade him to another team that claims the starter. If no club claims Anderson, the Cubs can either release him or assign him to Iowa. But since the 29-year-old has more than three seasons of service, he can elect free agency rather than a minor league assignment.
