Cubs Injury Report: Willson Contreras Avoids ‘Worst Case Scenario,’ Out at Least Two Weeks
Willson Contreras left Wednesday’s game after pulling his hamstring trying to run out a grounder, limping his way back to the dugout with the support of first base coach Brandon Hyde and team trainers.
The energetic catcher underwent an MRI in Arizona Thursday afternoon and seemed relatively upbeat about the process.
On my way! To get the MRI. It’s time to get healthy and come back stronger than before..??
Thank you all for the support ??— Willson Contreras (@WContreras40) August 10, 2017
ESPN’s Jesse Rogers tweeted out Thursday evening that the Cubs essentially avoided the “worst case scenario” and that the catcher will miss at least two weeks. Rogers did, however, note that the injury could take upwards to a month to heal depending on progress, but the Cubs expect Contreras back by the end of the regular season.
The news brings a sigh of relief for the Cubs and fans, given that the alternative could’ve been a torn hamstring that would’ve required surgery and significant recovery time.

Alex Avila will be behind the dish for the a lion’s share of the starts in the meantime. The Cubs have yet to make a corresponding move, but Victor Caratini seems like a good bet to return from Iowa and spell Avila every few games or so.
