Cubs Quick Hits: Ian Happ’s Strike-Zone Contact Among Worst in MLB
We know Ian Happ has struggled mightily through his first 50 plate appearances this season. But the extent to which he is flailing is pretty eye-popping, especially against strikes.
Happ’s contact rate against pitches inside the strike zone is a lowly 65.1 percent, much lower than the 77.9 percent rate last season. Only Matt Olson of the Oakland Athletics has a worse contact rate inside the zone (64.0 percent) among qualified hitters.
I can’t say that I’m not a little disconcerted with Happ’s performance to start the year. But given his track record and his massive upside, it wouldn’t be that surprising to see him make a swift adjustment.
