Darvish Feels Pain During Bullpen, Alters Mechanics to Alleviate It
It was almost a case of here we go again, but the latest footnote in the ongoing Yu Darvish saga may have a happy ending. After throwing a 23-pitch bullpen session in St. Louis Friday afternoon, the rehabbing pitching said that he initially felt some discomfort in his right arm. After changing his mechanics, however, the pain disappeared.
Darvish initially felt pain, altered arm extension and pain vanished. One more pen session. 26 pitches. Reverted to mechanics in spring training.

Darvish said he felt pain during first 10 pitches or so. He altered his mechanics (they changed along the way & this was going back to how he threw in spring) and pain went away. He believes this was a positive step. 23 pitches today. Another pen or two will come & then sim game.

The way he made it seem, this was good because he believes the altered mechanics were causing the pain — at least today. So going back to original is good. https://t.co/EWLtv2oJ3v

So I guess that’s good. It’s actually very good if he improved throughout the session and was allowed to continue throwing. He told reporters that he felt optimistic about his results but that it’d take at least one more go at it before he’s ready to face live batters.
The key at this point will be how he feels tomorrow and in subsequent days, and whether he can maintain those solid mechanics.
