CI Recap (8/30/18) – Cubs 5, Braves 4: La Stella Powers Cubs to Win

Mike Montgomery made his first start back from the disabled list and it went moderately well. He allowed four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out six over 4.1 innings of work. The final run was allowed by Brandon Kintzler.

The Cubs offense was able to take advantage of the chances they got, scoring two runs in the 2nd inning, another in the 3rd, and the biggest two in the 6th. Those final two runs came courtesy of Tommy La Stella, who blasted his first home run of the season to put the Cubs ahead for good. (Box score).

Why the Cubs Won

The Cubs were able to keep the Braves from stringing hits together, for the most part. The top three Braves hitters went 7-for-11, scored all four runs, and drove in three. Everybody else in their lineup went 2-for-16 with a walk and a run driven in.

Key Moment

Just after the Cubs allowed the Braves to take the lead in the bottom of the 5th, Willson Contreras grounded out and Kyle Schwarber hit a single to right. The pitcher’s spot was up, so Joe Maddon went to La Stella to pinch hit. Though the diminutive infielder has been slumping lately, he came through by smashing a two-run dong into the Chop House.

Stats that Matter

• The Cubs went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
• This was the first game in which Daniel Murphy went hitless since he joined the Cubs.
• The bullpen allowed only one man to reach base, striking out three over 4.2 innings of work.

Bottom Line

The Cubs were able to get a quality win against one of the top teams in the NL. Jason Heyward left the game in the bottom of the 5th with right hamstring tightness, but hopefully it isn’t anything serious, The Cubs are currently 79-54 and have a five-game lead in the NL Central over both the Cardinals and Brewers.
