Cubs Announce Hiring of Mark Loretta as Bench Coach

After Brandon Hyde departed for the Orioles managerial gig, the Cubs were once again looking for a new bench coach (Dave Martinez left the position vacant following the 2017 season). Former Cubs like David Ross and Mark DeRosa were naturally brought up as potential replacements, but neither will ultimately fill the role. On Wednesday, the Cubs named former infielder Mark Loretta to the position as Hyde’s replacement.

Loretta retired from his MLB career after finishing the 2009 season with the Dodgers. He debuted in 1995 with the Brewers and also played for the Astros, Padres, and Red Sox. He was a two-time All-Star and won a Silver Slugger Award in 2004 while with San Diego. Prior to joining the Cubs, Loretta worked for nine years in the Padres front office, primarily as a special assistant in the baseball operations department.

The Cubs also announced the hiring of Bob Tewksbury as a mental skills coordinator.
