Cubs Quick Hits: Illustrating Kyle Hendricks’ Two Separate Changeups
Kyle Hendricks’ changeup is so incredibly beautiful that I just spent the last 20 minutes watching him wreck the Los Angeles Dodgers in the clinching game of the 2016 NLCS. If you would like to reminisce as well, here’s video of the dominant start that led the Cubs to the World Series.
The really beautiful thing about Hendricks’ changeup is that he doesn’t have just one. Nope, he has two offspeed offerings, one that moves with less fading action and another that tails away in similar fashion to his sinker.
Both are illustrated in the below figure as two distinct blue peaks. The smaller peak on the right represents the changeup he throws to lefties, which has about 40 percent less fading action than his regular changeup.
