LHP Randy Rosario Gets Final Bullpen Spot as Cubs Option LHP Kyle Ryan, Reassign RHP Allen Webster
Barring a very late move to add another pitcher, lefty Randy Rosario will break camp with the big club. An unexpected contributor last season, Rosario got the nod after the Cubs optioned fellow lefty Kyle Ryan to Triple-A and reassigned righty Allen Webster to minor league camp.
Rosario, who debuted briefly with the Twins in 2017, made 44 appearances with the Cubs last season and pitched to a 3.66 ERA. His 5.76 K/9 mark wasn’t very impressive, nor was his 4.24 BB/9 tally, but he’s a known commodity and the Cubs had said more than once that they wanted another lefty in the bullpen following Bryan Duensing’s designation for assignment.
Rosario hasn’t looked as good as either Webster or Ryan this spring, though putting stock in exhibition numbers is a good way to lose your investment. Still, the grasp on that last bullpen opening is tenuous at best, with several capable options waiting in the wings.
The final roster spot should end up going to Mark Zagunis, which the Cubs have already indicated, but we may not know for sure until later in the day.
