Watch: Highlights of Kyle Hendricks’s 81-pitch Complete Game Shutout of Cardinals
Anthony Rizzo got the scoring started with a towering 3-run blast in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Javy Baez made a gem of a defensive play to rob Paul DeJong of a sure single with a runner on base in the top of the 4th inning. But the story today was Kyle Hendricks.
Hendricks pitched perhaps his finest game as a member of the Chicago Cubs. He threw a complete game shutout and needed only 81 pitches to do it. That was good for 2.7 pitches per batter and, in case you weren’t totally sure, that’s pretty good. The Cardinals managed to scatter four hits on the day, and only had a runner in scoring position once. So, yeah, complete domination.
And yes, all of that would seem pretty hard to believe if we didn’t have the highlights to prove it. Which we do right here.
