Willson Contreras Expected to Resume Full Baseball Activities Friday
Willson Contreras was placed on the injured list retroactive to Sunday, but all indications are that his stay there will span the minimum 10-day duration. Contreras texted Joe Maddon to say he could have started Monday night and the move to IL him is more precautionary than anything. An examination by a specialist revealed a fairly innocuous bruise, so the plan at this point is for him to resume full activity Friday and use the rest of the time to heal and stay sharp.
The belief is that new shoes and a hard playing surface caused the injury, similar to what we heard with Javy Báez and a heel injury that hampered him for a while. Speaking from experience, that stuff is no joke. Contreras will wear custom orthotic insoles moving forward and may need to reach out to Ben Zobrist to find out where to buy old man shoes locally.
This is very good news all around, though it means Theo Epstein and the front office need to be ready to wheel and deal by next week. While the trade for Martín Maldonado helps to fill the immediate void, it creates a glut that may need to be addressed via trade or other options. Hold onto your butts.
