Javy Báez had really been fighting himself at the plate for much of August, stringing together some truly brutal at-bats while getting nothing from a drastically increased contact rate. The matchup with slider-happy Marcus Stroman of the Mets had potential deepen that rut, but sometimes it’s the toughest opponents that bring out the best.

Sure enough, Javy doubled in his first trip to the plate and drew a rare walk in his second. Then he jumped on an 0-1 sinker and snuck it just over the wall in right for a two-run shot that put the Cubs up 4-1.
