Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/25/20): Rockies 12, Cubs 6 – Rox Rock Lester, Spoil Manager David’s Debut
David Ross made his long-awaited Cubs managerial debut as his good friend Jon Lester took the hill against the Rockies Tuesday. Manager David likely wishes he had taken one more sick day given the result at Sloan Park today, though he did at least get some practice giving his old battery-mate the hook.
Lester wasn’t sharp in his first outing of the spring, allowing five runs to score over one inning of work. The Rockies continued to pile on the next four frames and eventually went up 10-0 before the Cubs finally got on the board. They got the bats going a little, but it wasn’t nearly enough to come back and they eventually lost 12-6. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
The Rockies jumped all over Lester and the rest of the Cubs staff in the early innings and built a huge lead.
Key Moment
After allowing a leadoff double to David Dahl, Lester coaxed a grounder to third from Ian Desmond. Daniel Descalso’s throw eluded first baseman Robel García for an error, which opened the door to a three-run 1st inning.
Stats That Matter
- Ian Happ had the biggest Cubs hit of the game with a bases-clearing double in the 4th inning.
- Lester’s stats don’t look great, but nothing to worry about from a veteran in his first spring game: 1.2 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, and 0 K.
- Kyle Schwarber had a single and a stolen base in three at-bats.
Bottom Line
That was a real turkey of a game by the Cubs. If you are going to give up 10 runs in the first four innings, better to do it in spring training.
On Deck
