Cubs Promote LHP Brailyn Marquez, DFA Patrick Wisdom
They finally did it, the Cubs have promoted lefty flamethrower Brailyn Marquez for the last game of the regular season. He will wear number 61 and is available out of the bullpen for Sunday’s game against the White Sox.
The 21-year-old Marquez was ranked as the organization’s top prospect by Baseball America coming into the 2020 season and has been absolutely shoving at the alternate site. He combined to go 9-5 with a 3.13 ERA last year in 22 starts between low-A South Bend and high-A Myrtle Beach, earning Midwest League All-Star honors and setting a single-game strikeout record for the SB Cubs.
Marquez began the season with South Bend, going 5-4 with a 3.61 ERA in 17 starts to earn the promotion to Myrtle Beach, where he went 4-1 with a 1.71 ERA in five starts. He joins the Cubs having never pitched above the Single-A level, but he’s still got a great deal more professional experience than Sox reliever Garrett Crochet, who was just drafted this summer and has wowed with his triple-digit stuff.
Marquez should get a chance to pitch Sunday because the game is meaningless, so keep your fingers crossed for a look as his big fastball and nasty breaking stuff.
In order to make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Patrick Wisdom was designated for assignment.
