Why the Cubs Won
The Cubs put up an eight-spot thanks to Anthony Rizzo and Willson Contreras, who both hammered home runs. Kyle Hendricks was his usual effective self other than an adventure at first base on a single where he collided with Jake Cronenworth. Thankfully, he jumped right back to his feet and went on playing without any issue.
Key Moment
Willson Contreras blasted a three-run homer to left off of Chris Paddack in the bottom of the 2nd inning to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead.
Stats That Matter
- Hendricks was good other than a hiccup in the 3rd inning: 3.1 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 4 K, and 1 BB.
- Contreras homered, had a triple, a single, and five runs knocked in on a monster night.
- Ian Happ had a single and two walks from the leadoff spot.
- Craig Kimbrel had his first clean inning of the spring: 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 K, and 0 BB.
Bottom Line
Our first peek at the Cubs’ regulars tonight looked balanced and power packed. This team could be a potent offense if it stays healthy. Oh, and it would be nice if their top starter didn’t crash into the opposing first baseman.
